Sweet and Spicy Roasted Nuts are a delicious crunchy snack. They are oil-free and sugar-free, perfect as a healthy appetizer or snack.
I don't roast nuts a lot.
Not because I don't like them. But because I like them too much. I eat them soooo quickly.
It doesn't help that when I roast nuts, I never put them away in a container. Instead, they end up in a bowl sitting on the counter. When food is out in the open like that, it's so easy to just grab a handful.
And I'm not saying that's bad. Honestly, these nuts are super healthy, so I'm not concerned that I'm eating food that is bad for me.
But it's helpful to be mindful of portion size. A typical serving of nuts is about 1/4 cup. Which, conveniently, is around a handful.
If you grab a handful of nuts every time you pass by the bowl, you're probably overdoing it.
Don't get me wrong, nuts ARE good for you. But if you eat too many, you will miss out on getting the nutrients of other foods, like fruits, veg, beans, and grains.
It's important to eat a balanced diet, with a variety of healthy foods. That's one of the reasons I do love roasting nuts.
Normally, I'm a peanut butter kind of girl. So it's good for me to mix things up and get the nutrients from nuts that I don't usually eat. And it helps me practice self-restraint, making sure that I only eat a serving or two!
Now let's talk nuts!
For these Sweet and Spicy Roasted Nuts, I used a combination of pecans, almonds, and cashews.
Why? Well, I wanted the nutritional variety and I also wanted several flavors and textures. You can choose your own favorite nut (or nuts) to use!
But what makes the nuts sweet and spicy? Let's get into the other ingredients.
We will coat our nuts in a delicious little sauce that's got ALL the flavors!
Step 1. Start by preheating the oven. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2. In a small bowl, mix sriracha, date syrup, salt, cinnamon, and cloves. We're creating a paste to coat the nuts.
Step 3. Add the nuts to a medium bowl. Then pour the sriracha mixture over the nuts. Stir until all the nuts are evenly coated.
Step 4. Spread the coated nuts on the prepared pan. Bake for 15-17 minutes, until the nuts are browned.
Step 5. Let the nuts cool completely on the pan. This is the most important step! It's what makes sure they stay crunchy. Then break apart and enjoy!
Thank you God for crunchy snacks. We praise you for fun fall flavors that fuel our bodies. Amen.
