Spice up your regular iced coffee this summer with three easy, sugar-free, plant-based ways to make refreshing decaf cold brew.
How much do you love cold brew coffee? Personally, I'm a huge fan. Drip coffee is amazing, but in the summer heat I want a drink that will cool me down.
Of course, I'm not opposed to heading over to Starbucks and grabbing myself a nice large class of cold brew. However, Starbucks can get expensive. And I mostly drink decaf coffee, so I'd prefer to have my cold brew decaf too. Plus, Starbucks has some fun recipes, but sometimes you're just craving flavors that Starbucks doesn't have.
Three amazing reasons to make decaf cold brew at home!
It's so easy, too. You don't need any fancy gadgets. All you need is some coffee, water, and a pitcher. (And maybe some extra ingredients if you want to make one of my delicious flavors.)
But seriously, there's no need to go to Starbucks for cold brew when you can make it right in your house.
Let's talk about the basic recipe and then we'll dive into those flavors.
Step 1. Start with some coffee. If you have whole beans, grind them like you would for drip coffee. I prefer decaf coffee but you can just as easily use caffeinated if that's what you drink.
Step 2. Place the coffee in a large pitcher with some water and let the mixture sit out. I've found that 24 hours produces decent coffee, but if you like your cold brew strong, 48 hours is the way to go.
It's that simple. Just let the coffee mixture sit in the pitcher for 24-48 hours. No need to stir. No maintenance required. After 48 hours, strain the coffee grounds out of the liquid. Easy decaf cold brew right in your own kitchen!
Now for the flavors...
Of course, you can always drink the cold brew plain. But flavors are fun and a great way to mix up your drink. My favorite cold brew flavors are vanilla, almond, and mint. All of them are super easy! You'll just need the extract of your choice. For vanilla, use vanilla extract, for almond, use almond extract, and for mint, use peppermint extract.
All you need to do is pour yourself a glass and add a couple drops of extract. I like to do this so I can have multiple flavors from one batch of cold brew. But if you want a whole pitcher of one flavor, just add a teaspoon or two of extract to the pitcher.
It doesn't get easier than that! I hope you enjoy some refreshing summer cold brew.
God, thank you for refreshing drinks. Let us enjoy the fun adventure of picking out new flavors. Amen.
